Why I Chose This Tile
May 2026 · 3 min read
There's a moment in every project where a single material decision sets the tone for everything around it. In this bathroom, it was the tile.
The easy choice would have been a crisp white subway — safe, timeless, forgettable. Instead we used a hand-glazed zellige in a warm, uneven oatmeal. No two pieces are the same. In the morning light it almost glows; in the evening it goes soft and shadowy.
That irregularity is the entire point. A perfect tile reads as a product. An imperfect, handmade tile reads as a choice — it tells you a person was here, that someone cared. It gives a brand-new room the feeling of having a little history.
It cost more and took longer. It was worth every day of the wait.
